My Passion:
Although I have taught religion to adults for over 30 years, over the past fifteen years I have been increasingly drawn to topics that relate spirituality and religion to Nature and science. My motivation for doing so has not come simply from my concern about the environment. My primary motivation has come from my awareness of how far too often the focus of religion and psychology has become narrowed down to just the human sphere. But what about those intangible chords that bind our lives with Nature?
• Such as a person's heartfelt compassion for a dying whale.
• And the rejuvenation and new perspective on life that a walk in the woods can bring.
• And the sense of our place in the cosmos we get when, with awe, we hear scientists explain about the long life-story of our precious planet Earth.
These are the kinds of sensibilities that not only sustain our environmental activism but also sustain us.
I am also the author of the book book Wrestling Brothers: Rethinking Religion-Science Relationships. That book is the fruition of my thirty years as a teacher and lecturer.
Educational Background:
I have a degree in Religion and English from Trinity University, did graduate work at the University of Chicago Divinity School, and have continued my education at the School for Continuing Studies at Rice University.I feel, however, that I have learned just as much from the study I have done preparing for my teaching classes and making presentations.
